DNS stands for Domain Name System. This system is used to
associate a domain name (e.g. www.simplehost.com) with one or multiple
IP addresses. Now, an IP (Internet Protocol) address is like a phone
number to a computer. Every computer has one but just like a phone
number, sometimes an IP address can be hard to remember. This is
why there is DNS. Instead of having to remember, 216.226.138.60
we only have to remember www.simplehost.com.
The domain registrar you purchased your domain name from
will assign two IP addresses to your domain name. These IP addresses
are also called nameservers. So, with your domain name, you will
have to manage a Primary and a Secondary Nameserver. These nameservers
determine what server, on the Internet, your domain name will propagate
to. In order to upload your web content to the SimpleHost
Server, or receive/send email, or type your domain name into
a browser and have your website be displayed, you
will need to update your Primary and Secondary Nameservers to:
ns.simplehost.com and
ns2.simplehost.com.
The only way to manage or update your nameservers and other
information regarding your domain name is through your domain registrar.
Remember, your domain registrar is where you purchased your domain
name. If you purchased your domain name through SimpleHost,
then your domain registrar will be
Simple Host. All domain registrars will provide their customers
with information and a manage area where you can login to update
your nameservers. Simply, go to your domain registrars website and
login to your domain manage area to update your namerservers. For more help, your registrar may be listed below in a tutorial specific to your domain name. We
have provided at the top of this page the SimpleHost
DNS information you will need to propagate your domain name
to the SimpleHost Server. Also, when
you make a change to your DNS, that change is not instant. It will
take at least 24-72 hours for your domain name to propagate to the
SimpleHost Server.
There are many ways to find where your domain name is propagating.
We will provide you with the two easiest ways that will help you
the most. The first would be to check a WHOIS Search Engine. A WHOIS
Search Engine will give you information about every domain name
that is registered. We recommend Every
WHOIS (http://www.everywhois.net) to find information about
your domain name. Second, we recommend you just type your domain
name into your web browser. If you see the Welcome to SimpleHost
Start Page, your domain name is propagating to the SimpleHost
Server.
